Taltal / Quebrada san Ramon

Taltal is a minor quiet fishing village squeezed in between the Andes and the Pacific. Just about 10 kilometres north of the town there is some sort of 'entrance' to Quebrada San Ramon, which leads up into the mountains and guides you to interesting plants. Here it's only possible to walk on foot and  if you wish to have enough time to see it all, you will need to bring a tent for the night.  As walking up in the gorge (quebrada) you will see a lot of copiapoas changing slightly as you walk. You will again realize that dividing a genus into particular species is the idea of man as the changing in the appearance of the plants is very moderate and fascinating. On top you will find Copiapoa krainziana with its long and soft white spines. As you walk down you will realize that the species are changing their appearances and the spines are getting shorter ending up with  Copiapoa albispina with much shorter but still white spines. Whether Copiapoa krainziana and the different forms can hybridize with one another and Copiapoa cinerea as you find at the bottom of the quebrada is a good question.
